Event Recap: Summer Smoke at Studio Square with Hispaniola Cigars

On Thursday, July 5th, cigar smokers from all over New York dropped by the Studio Square Beer Garden in Long Island City for an evening of drinks, smokes, food, and conversation. It was the first outdoor summer smoke of this year for FineTobaccoNYC, and the weather was beautiful. The cigar highlight of the night was Hispaniola Cigars, who are good friends of FineTobaccoNYC and a company that makes truly incredible, unique, hand-crafted cigars.

In my mind, the most special aspect of the evening was the venue. FineTobaccoNYC was given access to the beautiful Studio Square terrace, which included sales of Hispaniola Cigars, and a private bar with a selection of beers and spirits. For $10, cigar smokers received a free beer, a waived cutting fee, and access to the beautiful terrace. We also raffled off the entire line of Hispaniola Cigars, which, if you have smoked Hispaniola, you know is a steal for just $10 to enter.

The Studio Square terrace is open every Thursday, and we’ll be hosting more events there in the future. To join us as we smoke and hang out, join our event mailing list and like us on Facebook to get notifications of upcoming events and see more photos from this event!

After a long summer of awesome events, it is my pleasure to announce two upcoming fall FineTobaccoNYC events. But first, two quick updates. The first is that FineTobaccoNYC is now officially sponsored by Astoria Imperial Cigars – we’re proud to be supported by such a great lounge and look forward to developing a business relationship. Second is that FineTobaccoNYC, courtesy of Kelvin Batista, is now maintaining the largest and most comprehensive cigar event calendar in the New York City area. Click the link and bookmark it!

Diamante’s 2nd Anniversary Party – Saturday, 11/05/2011
We at FineTobaccoNYC are proud to sponsor this special occasion of one of my favorite cigar lounges. The event runs almost all day, so stop by and say hi to David Diamante himself, and come smoke out with the FineTobaccoNYC squad. I’ll be there along with Kelvin, James, Tim (the most recent addition to the FTNYC team), and plenty of friends. There will be a DJ, a raffle, big prize giveaways and no BYO charge! Come support a local shop and have a good time doing it!

The FineTobaccoNYC “Lazy Sunday Pipe Smoke” at Velvet Cigar Lounge – Sunday, 11/13/2011:

For all of you I’ve heard say you want to learn more about pipes (tobacco, packing, lighting, etc), FTNYC is hosting its first everpipe-smoking event! We will be spending a relaxing Sunday afternoon experiencing the new and exclusive pipe tobacco blends at Velvet Cigar Lounge, and I’ll be giving a brief pipe 101 class. Dan Bsharat, owner of Velvet, has also offered to waive the BYO fee and open the lounge early exclusively for the FineTobaccoNYC event. The shop will be selling pipes, tobacco, and their premium blend cigar, the (fantastic) Velvet Bowery.
What: Our first pipe event, exclusive lounge space, LIMITED availability (RSVP quick!)
When: Sunday, Nov. 13th from noon – 3pm
What to Bring: a pipe/tobacco if you have one, $$ to try the Velvet blends

FTNYC Event Recap: The “Fall Smoke” at Velvet Cigar Lounge

FTNYC’s “Fall Smoke” at Velvet Cigars

Last night, FineTobaccoNYC hosted the first Fall smoke of the season at Velvet Cigars on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. By the day before the event, 17 people from all over New York City had RSVPd for the event, and 14 showed up. So there were plenty of people to meet, and even more conversations to have! The event was officially scheduled to run from 7:00pm – 9:00pm, but FineTobaccoNYC event guests stayed much later enjoying cigars, wine, and the beautiful atmosphere set by Velvet’s gorgeous lounge.

Cigars making an appearance last night were mainly Velvet’s boutique blends, although some other cigars from Rocky Patel and Davidoff were present.  The cigar of the night was definitely Velvet’s new house blend, the “Bowery” (pictured below) that features an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and a blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos for fillers, all rolled and produced in a classic box-press style. But, the Bowery is a Maduro cigar, so many guests started with either the Cooper or Astor cigars. Also on hand last night were a variety of wines and beers that guests brought to share.

Among other things, the crisp Fall night was made special by Velvet’s incredible hospitality.  For the FTNYC event, Velvet dropped the $8 corking fee and offered four separate raffles. Three of the raffles were for two packs of Velvet cigars, and the grand finale raffle was for a slick, stainless steel double-guillotine cigar cutter.

Personally, I enjoyed the event most because of the new friends I was able to make.  It was fun to meet one of the first guests, Dan from Davidoff uptown and hear his story of falling in love with cigars and moving to New York City. I also met a few customers who didn’t know about FineTobaccoNYC and was able to share a bit of my passion for cigars and helping to sustain the New York City cigar culture.

As the later hours of the night approached, guests began to say their farewells and head out the front door and into the chilly Lower East Side night. The event was a great success: new and old friends, cigars, and great conversation.  This is what cigars are all about!
