Bunnahabhain has announced that it will release a one-off rare single malt that has lain undiscovered for four decades at the Islay distillery.
Bunnahabhain distillery, which is located on the north-east of the isle, will release only 750 bottles, which will be individually numbered and hand signed.
Hidden for 40 years, the whisky quietly matured until Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan, discovered the casks listed in the distillery ledgers: “It was an exhilarating moment to stumble on such a special find,” he said. “There are very few 40 year old Islays and unlike any other, Bunnahabhain’s taste is considered unique because the distillery does not heavily peat the fine malted barley.”
The Master Distiller recognised the significance of the discovery after finding the ‘Turney’ casks, which were filled with the precious Bunnahabhain malt over 40 years ago by eminent Glasgow wine merchants, J G Turney, and renowned for being the highest standard of quality.
Michelle Lansdowne, Senior Brand Manager at Burn Stewart, added: “ We are expecting a good deal of market interest in the 40 YO and with such limited availability of this one-off prestige bottling, it is sure to appeal to international collectors of rare malts.”
To capture the extraordinary journey, Bunnahabhain commissioned renowned illustrator, Iain McIntosh, to retrace the voyage through the specially designed labels. Each bottle is presented in a bespoke oak gift box containing a secret compartment that reveals hidden designs replicating the ‘Journey of Discovery.’
The multi-award winning Bunnahabhain is the flagship malt whisky from Burn Stewart Distillers and is exported to over 30 countries globally. Unlike its neighbouring distilleries on the Island, Bunnahabhain embodies “the gentle taste of Islay”, as it is the only non-peated Islay malt.
Bunnahabhain 40 YO
RRP: £1,999
Unchill-filtered (41.7% ABV)
Notes:
• Situated on the northern shore of Islay, Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 by William Robertson and brothers James and William Greenless
• Bunnahabhain is Gaelic for ‘mouth of the river’ and the distillery is situated right at the shoreline, close to where the Margadale River flows into Bunnahabhain Bay
• In 2003 Bunnahabhain was sold to Burn Stewart Distilleries for £10million. Today, production stands at 2.5million litres a year. Of this, 21,000 casks are kept at the distillery for maturation and the resultant whisky is used for the Black Bottle blend and for bottling as Bunnahabhain single malt

Well, Hurricane Sandy turned out to be a whopper of a storm. It goes without saying that anything pertaining to cigars has been basically blacked out since Hurricane Sandy hit a few nights ago. Now, I sit at a Starbucks, with my first internet access for 5 days.
Before the storm hit, I made the trek out to my girlfriend’s place in New Jersey where she lives alone to take care of her. I wasn’t prepared for all of the downed trees, the power outages that are still crippling crucial services, and the lack of any cellular or internet access since Monday. Last night, we drove to Jersey City, and the darkness enveloping Hoboken, Jersey City, and the Financial District was truly eerie. See below:

But quickly before my battery dies here at Starbucks, I want to say on behalf of Kelvin, David, Tim, James, and Ronnie, we hope all of you stay safe, get the supplies you need, and spend your time with your families. We also encourage all of those who have power, hot water, and internet access to do what they can to help others. Being without power and internet access for five days (and perhaps another 11 according to Con Ed) is, believe me, a terrible experience.
In any case, we’ll be posting via our Facebook page and updating you all. We’re also going to be putting together a cigar event celebrating the return of the city – but not until we have all done our part to secure the safety of our loved ones and those around us. Also, we send our regards to all cigar groups and cigar lounges in the city.
Feel free to tweet us @finetobacconyc, and drop a comment letting us know how you are doing if you are in the NY/NJ area.
BALLANTINE’S UNVEILS PREMIUM OFFERINGS FOR THE GIFTING SEASON
Ballantine’s, the No. 1 whisky in Europe, is launching a trio of stylish gift packs for its Ballantine’s Finest and Ballantine’s 12 Year Old expressions ahead of the festive period.
Building on the successful ‘Beyond’ global marketing platform, Ballantine’s 12 Year Old has received an intriguing makeover for this year’s seasonal gift pack. Inspired by a world of visual illusion and hidden messages, the gift pack reinforces the brand’s reputation for original and creative thinking.
The new, eye-catching gift tin uses Ballantine’s 12 visual equity and age statement to create a textual pattern that features the silhouette of a hidden bottle. Debossed tasting notes are strategically placed to be discovered inside the lid of the gift tin, which also features an embossed logo and age statement. Further enhanced by a combination of print techniques and finished with a gloss varnish, the gift tin aims to entice consumers to pick it up to experience its tactile qualities and further explore its innovative design.
Peter Moore, Brand Director for Ballantine’s, comments: “The new Ballantine’s 12 gift pack will bring to life the brand’s ‘Beyond’ positioning with an intriguing and intelligent design that is sure to capture the audience’s imagination.”
In addition to the Ballantine’s 12 gift tin, Ballantine’s Finest is launching two gift packs ahead of this year’s festivities.
A special gift tin includes the striking Ballantine’s Finest visual cues, in line with the popular expression’s new outer carton. A wrap-around design highlights an embossed crest and logo on both sides, while a debossed seal and signature is placed to be discovered inside the lid.
Aimed at a younger audience, an alternative gifting offering for Ballantine’s Finest is a stylish carrying zip case pack. Made of high density nylon, the pack includes an engraved tin-plate plaque to complete a more youthful, modern appeal.
“Our gift packs for Ballantine’s Finest and Ballantine’s 12 Year Old include something for everyone,” adds Moore. “We expect them to be extremely popular with people looking for eye-catching and stylish gift options in the run up to Christmas.”
Gift packs are available for 70cl, 75cl and 1L products. The limited edition packs will be available in more than 40 markets from the beginning of December 2012.

Last year, one of the most fantastic and unique events of the year was Tango in the Castle, an Argentine Tango show, complete with drinks, professional performances, and a milonga (tango social) that is open for the public to dance tango. And it all takes place at Morningside Castle, which sports beautiful architecture and a Gothic look that makes the Tango that much more romantic and enjoyable.
Those of you who know me know that as a tango dancer I have been to many events in New York City. I say with total confidence that, whether you dance tango or not, this is not an evening to miss, especially with ticket prices as low as around $50.

New York City Whiskey lovers are in for a treat this winter. Duke of Montrose, a new Scotch Whiskey bar, is scheduled to open on Fifth Avenue and Bergen Street, near Barclays Center.
The owners of the new bar are no strangers to Whiskey or to managing a high-quality establishment. The owners currently own another bar on the Upper East Side called Caledonia.
Below are a few selected quotes from this dnainfo.com article about the new location:
“Caledonia owner Steven Owen says the new bar, to be called Duke of Montrose — a title that’s linked to his ancestral Graham clan — will serve high-quality single malt whiskeys and a full menu of food. He hopes to open in December.”
“We’re really trying to bring something fairly sophisticated to the neighborhood with a Scottish flair to it,” Owen said.
Owen said Duke of Montrose will serve arena crowds, but the bar will be focused on neighborhood customers.
“Obviously we’ll cater [to the arena] but also to the local community,” Owen said. “Our establishment on the Upper East Side has been voted one of the best bars. We’re very intent on the community.”

Davidoff Madison Ave. is having a special event this Thursday that you probably don’t want to miss. As per our announcement a few weeks ago, the Zino Platinum Ten Year Anniversary was celebrated (in part) with some new, artistically inspired boxes. Well, now is your chance to experience the artistic side of tobacco, and try one of Davidoff’s newest cigars.
We should have an FTNYC representative on the scene reporting, so we’ll get back to you with some photos and a recap of the event.
