Ladies and Gents of the Leaf,

Paley park is the last legal park to smoke at in NYC, and it is legal because the park is privately owned. After seeing some pictures and reading a few articles, I knew the park was pretty, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for just how beautiful it really is. The park is wedged between two large skyscrapers, and fields dozens of chairs with small tables, a gorgeous waterfall, and a security guard that also enforces park rules (more on that below).

The park is open to smokers all 7 days of the week, but does close in the evening. If you are going to smoke at the park, here are a few tips:
But don’t let that list of rules fool you. The park is incredibly relaxed, and conveniently shielded from wind that can cause a less than satisfying smoking experience. So what are you waiting for? Grab some friends and drop by Paley park for a smoke!

Summer is fast approaching, and that means new FineTobaccoNYC events around the city. We’ll be kicking off this summer season at Refugio Cigar House, hosted by owner and manager Mike Lopez. Below is the official invite that went out to FTNYC advance-notice event mailing list subscribers. If you want advance notice on FTNYC events, just submit your email address on the right side (——->) and you’ll receive invites to our social cigar events in the future.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Leaf,

UPDATE — Due to bad weather, Nat Sherman has postponed this event. The new date/time of the event will be announced as soon as info is available.
——
Attention NYC cigar smokers! Nat Sherman International (located on 42nd st. between 5th and Madison) invites New York City cigar enthusiasts to participate in the worldwide launch of the Bolivar D’Oro line of cigars on the evening of Thursday, February 3rd. The event will benefit Grand Central Neighborhood Social Services Corporation, which provides services to over 300 homeless adults a day. Nat Sherman will also auction off a few pre-embargo Cuban cigar samplers that you can get more information on in the image to the left. Event entry costs $95 and the will include a sampling of the D’Oro line, cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres.
You can find the official Nat Sherman invite directly above, which I’ve (admittedly a bit hastily) converted from a .pdf file to a jpeg file for easier viewing. In the future, event announcements for NYC cigar establishments will happen not in individual posts (like this one), but in an either weekly or bi-weekly aggregated announcement. I’m still not sure which it makes more sense to do, but I’ll be rolling out the first few posts sometime in the next month.
(Read the event invite here)
The past few years have seen a wave of new lounges opening (Caballeros, Maraya, and Diamante’s to name a few), each lounge adding its own unique touch to the New York cigar scene. Still, options are few when it comes to finding a good place to smoke during the cold winter months, so the addition of a new establishment is always exciting.

Refugio Cigar House will be officially open for business next week. However, this Saturday (the 22nd) at 6:00pm – 11:00pm, Refugio Cigar House and FineTobaccoNYC are throwing a grand opening party. All FineTobaccoNYC readers are welcome to attend.
There will be great attractions at this event! You can find all of the details by clicking on the link below:
FineTobaccoNYC invite to the Refugio Cigar House grand opening
The past two months have found me completely inundated with college work. My senior thesis, finals, and a stack of topics to write papers on. In that time, I haven’t set up many events, but I have put some serious work into improving the website and expanding FTNYC into more online venues – more on our other sites later.
The most important update is that I just added a nifty new tool to the FTNYC Facebook page that makes it that much easier to join the event mailing list. You can still send me an email at matthias.ftnyc@gmail.com to join, but now interested individuals can simply submit their emails through the Facebook page. Individuals can also register to hear about events on the “FineTobaccoNYC Events” page that has a form like this one:
[contact-form subject=”New subscriber” to=”matthias.ftnyc@gmail.com”]
[contact-field label=”Name” type=”name” /]
[contact-field label=”Email” type=”email” required=”true” /]
[contact-field label=”How did you hear about FineTobaccoNYC?” type=”select” options=”Search Engine,Friend,Twitter,Facebook” /]
[/contact-form]
So, you can now connect with FineTobaccoNYC through:
About two weeks ago I was surprised to open my email account and find an email from Barry (from acigarsmoker.com) inviting me to the La Aurora launch event at Nat Sherman in Manhattan. The event took place from 5:00pm – 9:00pm last Thursday and featured a live jazz band, samples of Guillermo Leon’s new cigar, hors d’oeuvres, and a rum pairing that complemented the La Aurora cigar perfectly. Aside from getting to finally meet Barry, I was also able to meet Guillermo Leon, John from WellCapped, and Lindsay (aka “The Cigar Chick“).
The atmosphere at Nat Sherman was simply beautiful: two floors of smoking lounge, welcoming staff, and a jazz band upstairs playing for all of the guests. Cigar smokers from all New York and everywhere else showed up, hung their jackets, and enjoyed conversation over the excellent cigars.
Guests tasted traditional Presidente Beer and Rum Zafra Master Reserve 21
year aged while they enjoyed upbeat trumpet melodies by jazz player
Waldron Ricks while discovering La Aurora’s new sumptuous cigar flavors.
León says, “Obviously, this cigar is personal for me. It is part of my
family’s legacy for the past 107 years. In this cigar, I wanted something
with deep complexity yet also a stronger smoke than most of our offerings.
I think this is something that will please today’s smokers.”

G’day fellow Brothers and Sisters of the Leaf. I am extremely excited to be a part of FineTobaccoNYC. I have known Matthias for almost 3 years now and have enjoyed watching him fall in love with premium tobacco just as I did as well as helping him on his journey when I could. So when he came to me with the idea for FTNYC I knew that I had to be a part of it.
I am currently working in the premium tobacco industry as the Client Services Associate for Davidoff of Geneva’s Madison Avenue store. I finally have a job that is in line with my passion and I love every minute of it.
When I am not at work I try to immerse myself into the cigar culture in ways that are non-work related. The main way that I have done this is I started The Belicoso Brothers Cigarcast, a weekly cigar podcast that I co-host with my best friend, Peter Work. You can check us out at www.BelicosoBrothers.com and on iTunes under Belicoso Brothers CigarCast.
I love to help people explore and grow in their own journeys with premium tobacco and will never walk away from a cigar related conversation, so if anybody has any questions relating to anything premium tobacco I would love to answer them. You can send your inquiries to info.ftnyc@gmail.com.
I will leave you all with one of my favorite quotes relating to premium tobacco: “A cigar ought not to be smoked solely with the mouth, but with the hand, the eyes, and with the spirit.” – Zino Davidoff
Now go forth and smoke.
In the past week we’ve seen a pretty substantial increase in new traffic to the site (very encouraging!), as well as a lot of inquiries via our twitter and email, so for those of you just showing up, please note that this site is still under construction. Guy and I are working on bringing all of the pages up to speed – so if you notice any half built pages, those should be up to full capacity soon.
Also, if you notice any pages that you think you could add valuable information to (e.g. “Fine Tobacco on the Cheap” or “Locations”), then drop a comment here. We want NYC deals and locations to be a cooperative project between the team and everyone else living in NYC who enjoys fine tobacco. Finally, if you are interested in being a part of the FT:NYC Team as a contributor to the site, send us an email at matthias(dot)clock(at)gmail.com!
