Mr. Clock, I appreciate your article and you raise some valid points. I agree that you can not become Master Sommelier in Cigars in a weekend. I am in the process of taking the course and there are steps to it before you can reach that level. First, you become a sommelier, and then you can go for the more advanced Master’s program. There is also a very detailed online course that you must take and complete prior to the weekend training. I will tell you the online course is very good. Titles will be titles some are valid and some are not, what I can tell you is that you will definitely be a better Cigar professional after you have completed the course. Does your knowledge rise to the level of Cigar Sommelier after completing the course and getting the certificate, not sure? It depends on a lot of the items you mentioned, like experience and prior knowledge. The course is educational, fun, and worth the price for professionals and aficionados like myself. I do appreciate your article, as it is thoughtful, fair, and inciteful. just note, the Master Sommelier in wine as issued by the Court of Master Sommeliers is the hardest exam in the world and it does not take months, it takes many, many years. It is easier to become a lawyer or doctor than a Master Sommelier from the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Are there alternative programs that would ‘suffice’? As someone who is currently looking to gain knowledge on the subject and eventually a potential title, I think you nailed it in your article for transparency and honesty. Personally, I lean towards taking the IACS program to form a base and from which to expand my interest on the subject. If nothing else, I see it as a centralized library for all things, or most things cigar related. Thank you for this article.

Check out Tobacconist University. Much more rigorous program. Thanks for commenting!
